Part of our complete guide: All 45 Nice Classification Classes Explained
A yoga mat falls under Class 28, the class for sporting goods, exercise equipment, and fitness gear — alongside gym equipment, resistance bands, and sports gear generally.
Why not Class 27?
It's an easy mix-up: a yoga mat is, physically, a mat you put on the floor, and Class 27 covers carpets, rugs, and floor coverings. But Nice Classification groups goods by function and market, not just physical form. A yoga mat is bought and used as fitness equipment, not as flooring or home décor, which is why it's grouped with sporting goods in Class 28 rather than with door mats and rugs in Class 27.
The same logic applies to other exercise mats — pilates mats, gym floor mats sold as fitness equipment — all of which sit in Class 28. A bath mat or a decorative floor mat, by contrast, does belong in Class 27.
If you sell a broader fitness product line
Fitness brands often sell across multiple classes without realizing it: equipment (Class 28), athletic clothing (Class 25), and — if there's a subscription app or online class platform attached — Class 41 (fitness training) or Class 42 (if positioned as software). If your business spans more than just the mat itself, it's worth checking each product line separately.
Our Nice Classification Finder can suggest a starting list based on your full product range. For every class in the system, see the complete Nice Classification guide.
