Part of our complete guide: All 45 Nice Classification Classes Explained

General-purpose batteries — AA and AAA cells, power banks, and batteries for electronics and gadgets — fall under Class 9, the class covering electrical and scientific apparatus.

Why vehicle batteries are classified differently

A battery designed and sold specifically for a vehicle, such as a two-wheeler or automotive battery, falls under Class 12 instead, the same class covering two-wheelers and vehicle-specific spare parts. The logic mirrors how vehicle engines are classified separately from general industrial motors: it's the vehicle-specific purpose, not the underlying technology, that determines the class. A manufacturer producing both general electronics batteries and automotive batteries under one brand would need both classes.

Where battery brands often need a second class

A battery manufacturer that also runs its own retail or dealer network under the brand needs Class 35 for the retail service, in addition to whichever product class or classes apply.
