Part of our complete guide: All 45 Nice Classification Classes Explained
Fertilizers fall under Class 1, which covers chemicals used in industry, science, and agriculture — a broad, foundational chemicals class that also includes raw materials like unprocessed plastics and industrial adhesives.
Why pesticides are classified differently
It's a common assumption that "agrochemicals" is a single category, but the Nice Classification splits it in two. Fertilizers, which feed and condition soil or crops, sit in Class 1. Pesticides, insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides, which are formulated to kill or repel pests, fall under Class 5 instead — the same class covering pharmaceuticals and ayurvedic products, since these are treated as substances for combating disease or infestation rather than general industrial chemicals. An agrochemical company selling both a fertilizer line and a pesticide line under one brand needs both classes.
Where agrochemical brands often need a second class
A company that also sells farm equipment or offers agronomy advisory services under the same name would need to check those separately — equipment typically falls under a machinery class, and advisory services under a professional-services class, neither of which is covered by Class 1 or Class 5 alone.
