Part of our complete guide: All 45 Nice Classification Classes Explained

Pickle, or achar, falls under Class 29, the class covering preserved, dried, and processed fruits and vegetables. This is the same class that covers jams, murabba, and most preserved condiments made from fruit or vegetable bases.

Why Class 29, not Class 30

It's a reasonable guess that pickle might sit with spices in Class 30, since it's often shelved near masalas and sauces in a store. But Nice Classification groups pickle with preserved produce rather than spices, because the core product is a preserved vegetable or fruit, not a raw spice or seasoning blend. Class 30 is the right home for the spice blends and masalas that might go into making a pickle — not the finished pickle itself.

If your brand sells a wider condiment range

Many pickle brands also sell products that do belong in Class 30 — ready-made spice mixes, chutney powders, or masala blends sold alongside the jarred pickle. A brand with both product types typically needs Class 29 and Class 30 together to cover the full range, not just one or the other.

If you're building out a full condiment or packaged-food line, our Nice Classification Finder can help sort each product into the right class. See the complete Nice Classification guide for the full 45-class breakdown.
