Part of our complete guide: All 45 Nice Classification Classes Explained

Footwear falls under Class 25, grouped together with clothing and headwear rather than in a separate category of its own.

Why footwear sits with clothing, not on its own

Unlike bags and jewellery, which split off into their own classes (Class 18 and Class 14 respectively — see our entry on which class handbags and wallets are in), footwear is explicitly grouped with clothing under the Class 25 heading. Sneakers, sandals, formal shoes, and boots all sit here regardless of material or price point.

Where footwear is classified differently

Orthopedic and medical footwear — shoes sold specifically for corrective, therapeutic, or medical purposes rather than general wear — falls under Class 10, the class for medical apparatus and devices, not Class 25. A brand making both everyday sneakers and prescribed orthopedic insoles or shoes would need to check which class applies to each product line.

Where footwear brands often need a second class

A footwear brand running its own retail stores or an online store needs Class 35 for the retail service, in addition to Class 25 for the shoes themselves.
